Correspondence with Lord Melville, 1797-1802 (bulk 1798-99).

Collection contains private letters from Wellesley to Melville numbered 5, 7-12, 19-22 (25 June 1798-28 Dec. 1798). There are multiple copies of some letters (i.e. a duplicate copy and a triplicate copy) and sometimes a copy in cipher and a decoded copy. Enclosures are filed with the letter. Notable enclosures are: Enlarged Perpetual Treaty between EIC and Nawab Nizam ul Mulk, Sabadar of the Deccan (with no. 9); copy of a circular letter to the native princes and copy of a letter from Lord Mornington to Lord Clive (32 p.), both with no. 10; extracts from Lord Mornington's secret and confidential letters -- in cipher and decoded in pencil (to accompany no. 11); and Proposed partition of the Dominion of the late Tipoo Sultoun (with no. 12). Letters from 1800 to 1802 are unnumbered and are either private, secret and confidential or private and secret. Correspondents represented in the enclosures include: Lt.-Col. Kirkpatrick, Purnea, Lord Clive, General Harris, and B. Close.

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman.
